Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
