The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by just one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before sprint qualifying due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team opted for a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to crash, though minor, when he lost control at the fourth corner during the early running. Tsunoda slid over the track edges before spinning across the escape zone, and was blessed to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the quick descending corner before the final bend on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second slower than Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
