The 2026 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the simplified language that will be used to explain the intricate details of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The racing series is embarking on what is considered the largest rules overhaul in its illustrious history next season, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher energy storage, driving significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

During grand prix events, pilots will strategically manage ERS energy – including during flying laps – to achieve the peak performance.

Broad surveys were conducted with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the main elements of the new regulations.

The key objective was to make a range of advanced features of the competition as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been discarded in favour of straightforward terms that directly explain the real-world effect of the system.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that racers will have more power to make decisions regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and conservation.

The 2026 rules feature a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to improve the fans' insight of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a driver is less than a second the vehicle in front to execute an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual power boost from the ERS that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver full engine and battery energy at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – spreading on the straights for minimal air resistance and higher speed, and angling down in the turns for maximum downforce.
  • Energy Harvesting: Drivers can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during coasting at the end of straights or in certain corners where only reduced throttle is used.

Car Design Evolution

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they refine their designs.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The vehicles will feature moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straights to improve speed and increase straightline speed and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will retain the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the ERS, increasing from about 20% electrical in the current formula.

The ERS setup is simplified through the removal of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly component that harvested power from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be required to run on carbon-neutral fuel, produced using biomass or synthetic industrial processes.
